Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about Unitarian Universalism and the Winston-Salem Fellowship.

What do I wear to your services?
People tend to dress casually but you can dress up if you want to.
What are your services like?
We gather to explore a wide variety of topics including world religions, social justice, and personal development. After the minister speaks, people often share their opinions on the topic and are allowed to disagree! Our music is as diverse as our theology and on any given Sunday you may hear classical, folk, show tunes or rock n’ roll. After services we continue to build community at our coffee hour.
Does the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Winston-Salem have a religious education program?
We help children discover the History of Unitarian Universalism, and to learn to respect people of various faiths. Nursery through high school children have classes during our Sunday Service. They are taught to respect themselves, other cultures and the earth.
Does the Fellowship have a nursery?
Yes, the Fellowship has a nursery, which we have available during Sunday services.
What is Sunday Forum?
If you enjoy freewheeling debate on a wide range of subjects, you will feel at home at the forum. Tough questions and laughter bring a greater understanding of history and current events. Search for truth and meaning within this friendly gathering.
Do Unitarian Universalists believe in God?
Some do and some do not. We are more concerned that a person's beliefs result in caring for other human beings and the earth.
Are Unitarian Universalists Christian?
We have expanded upon our Christian heritage to embrace the positive aspects of many world religions and philosophies. Some UU's identify themselves as Christian, some identify as Humanist, Jewish, Earth-Centered, Buddhist or other Philosophy.
Is Unitarian Universalism a cult?
No. The Universalist Church was founded in 1793, on the premise that God's love was strong enough to save all people. The Unitarian Association was founded in 1825 on the premise that God is one. The two denominations merged in 1961. We are NOT affiliated with the Rev. Sun Yung Moon, of the Unification Church.
Is Unitarian Universalism a real religion?
Not if you believe religion is dividing people between the saved and unsaved. However, if you believe that religion should seek to unite humanity rather than divide it, we might be more real than other religions. Some people think that we seem too good to be true.
What is Unitarian Universalism theology?
Classical Unitarianism argued from scripture (Luke 24:19, Acts 2:22) that Jesus was a prophet of God and not part of the Trinity. Classical Universalism also argued from scripture that all people were saved ( I Corinthians 15:22, Ephesians 1:9-10). Modern Unitarian Universalism considers many world religions and secular philosophies as sources of truth. We believe in religious freedom. Our community helps people unfold their own unique spiritual path.
What is the "official" coffee of Unitarian Universalism?
We value freedom of choice in this and other matters.
Can Unitarian Universalist ministers perform marriage ceremonies?
UU ministers are legally certified to officiate at weddings. In addition to traditional marriages, we perform ceremonies that other religions forbid. If you are divorced, gay, lesbian, or if you and your fiance are of different faiths, your love will be honored and respected by Unitarian Universalists.
How do Unitarian Universalist ministers become ministers?
Typically UU ministers earn a Master's Degree in Divinity and work with the denomination's Ministerial Fellowship Committee to prepare to serve our congregations.
How does Unitarian Universalism promote fellowship?
We honor the inherent worth and dignity of each individual, yet encourage each person to discover how we all are connected to the interdependent web of all existence. Also we hold potlucks and throw parties.
Do Unitarian Universalists believe in Heaven and Hell?
Some believe in Heaven. I imagine few believe in Hell except for that we create ourselves. Some UU's also believe in Reincarnation. Some believe there is no afterlife.
Do Unitarian Universalists pray?
Yes, each in their own way. They also meditate or just think things through.
How many UU's does it take to screw in a light bulb?
We choose not to make a statement either in favor of or against the need for a light bulb. However, if in your own journey you have found light bulbs work for you, that is fine. You are invited to write a poem or compose a modern dance about your personal relationship with your light bulb, and present it next month at our annual light bulb Sunday service, in which we will explore a number of light bulb traditions, including incandescent, fluorescent, three-way, long-life and tinted, and of course eco-friendly sunshine, all of which are equally valid paths to luminescence.
What does Unitarian Universalism mean?
Unitarian means "God is one." Universalism means "All are saved."
