The holiday season is a time for family and friends and a time to reconnect with what makes us feel grounded. For many, it is a time for reflecting on what we can do, as individuals, to make a difference in the lives of those who are less fortunate.

This year, why not send a holiday card that does more than just spread holiday cheer? Why not send season's greetings that also support human rights?

UUSC holiday cards are a colorful, fun way to celebrate the holidays, while promoting justice and compassion in human relations. By purchasing a 10-card pack, you support UUSC in our efforts to promote workers' rights, civil liberties, the human right to water, and the rights of vulnerbale groups in humanitarian crises.

Order your holiday cards online from our web site, where you can see ALL the cards we have available (the graphic above show only two of the selections).

Thank you for your continued support of UUSC.

Sincerely,

Maxine Neil
Director of Institutional Advancement

Enjoy the extended holiday season at The Mountain

The Holidays are a great time to be at The Mountain, so come for an engaging program while enjoying the peaceful stillness of The Mountain!

30th Annual Thanksgiving at The Mountain
November 26 - 30, 2008

The inaugural event for our Thirtieth Anniversary Celebration, The Mountain Community gathers to rejoice in the abundant reasons for gratitude in this special season, in this special place.

In The Midst of Violence & War . . .
a song of peace
December 5 - 7, 2008, with Stefan Andre Waligur

The Mountain is honored to welcome internationally renowned contemplative, musician and composer Stefan Andre Waligur. We'll sing new songs for peace and justice, share stories, learn of some well known and some lesser known peacemakers who are inspiring us today. Through music, nature, laughter, silence and thought provoking conversational engagement, we will expand our own circle of awareness and peaceful influence.

No musical experience is required to participate - if you play an instrument, you are encouraged to bring it along!

A Gift of The Season
Santa's Favorite Chamber Music
December 19 - 21, 2008
In partnership with the
Highlands Cashiers Chamber Music Festival

A world class chamber music event that is made for families and the young at heart. "Father Christmas' Favorite Chamber Music" will feature works by Beethoven Mozart, Chopin and others, performed by Karen Bentley Pollick on violin and cellist David Hancock.

New Years at The Mountain
December 30, 2008 - January 1, 2009
Global, Local and Handmade Music
with Elise Witt and Mick Kinney

A tranquil Mountain tradition, featuring musical workshops that bring folks of all ages, backgrounds, cultures and faiths onto common ground as they 'band' together with voices and instruments to create amazing sounds and songs they never imagined possible!

Go to www.mountaincenters for pricing and registration information.

Beginning on November 16th a display will be available for viewing in the lobby with photos, registration forms and other information about  New Years at The Mountain. Early registration is recommended. The Gelbins have been attending this celebration for many years and will be happy to answer your questions about the event.

SOCIAL ACTION UPDATE

Sharing the Abundance:  Fall 500 Food Drive

WAY TO GO, UUF!  In four weeks, we've surpassed our goal of 500 pantry-item donations to Crisis Control Ministry.  The RE challenge, led by our fearless Aaron Roberts, brought in 218 items in one week.  Can we top that for the food drive's final week?  Stay tuned for the five-week grand total!  And in the meantime, please keep donations coming for our Winston-Salem neighbors who are truly in crisis - they have nowhere else to turn for their immediate needs.

Lobby Display This Sunday:  UUs Reducing Hunger

Check out ways our congregation works against hunger through partnership with Crisis Control Ministry, Meals on Wheels, Winston-Salem Summer Feeding Program for Hungry Kids, & Green Street Welcome Table.

You can also indicate interest in helping start & sustain a weekly community supper this summer, here at the Fellowship, similar to the one at Green Street.  We'd need a lot of dedicated volunteers to make this happen, so please consider participating!

Also in the Lobby:  Holiday Outreach Opportunities

What's up with the stuffed animals on the mantle?  Frank Beneditti & Gary Trowbridge are collecting them to brighten the holidays for children at AIDS Care Services & SCAN (Stop Child Abuse Now).

Through Dec 7, Donna & Ernie Schmid are collecting presents for the children of prisoners at the Cherry Street prison.  To participate, take a name from the foyer display, and bring back an unwrapped gift with a gift bag or wrapping paper, labeled with the child's name. The prisoners will wrap the presents for their children, which brings dignity to the prisoners and joy to their children.

Looking for meaningful gift ideas?  Anne Taylor coordinates Alternative Gifts International, where you can choose donations from a "Shopping List for the World."  Your donation makes a monetary donation to a chosen project - for example, renewed sight for the blind in Cambodia.  You receive a beautiful card to sign and send to someone on your gift list, with a description of the project you've supported in his/her name.  The Gift Market runs through Dec 21.

New Driver Needed for Meals-on-Wheels Team

There's an opening for a driver on the Northside route served by a team of UU volunteers.  He or she would deliver meals on the third Wednesday beginning in December.  Volunteers deliver hot, nutritious meals to seniors in need, on weekdays between 10:30 a.m. and noon.  Each route has 10 to 15 stop & takes approximately an hour to complete.  Some drivers cover a route by themselves, others with another person.  Volunteers are given an orientation before beginning their first delivery.

UUFWS members serving Northside are Dave Blair, Seiko Curran, Donna Hatchett, Patti Hubbard, Steve King, Andi and Ken Ostberg, Nan & Tim Prout, Patty Ricono, Lenore Shamey, & Anne & Dave Taylor.

If you want to become the newest Meals-on-Wheels driver from the Fellowship, please contact Bob Stern at 759-0620 or bobstern@infionline.net

Additional Way to Support Meals on Wheels

By linking your Lowes Foods card to Senior Services, you can donate your points to help provide groceries for seniors on the Meals-on-Wheels waiting list.  Just see a manager at any Lowes Foods store to link your card.

Public Hearing on Alternative Education Held at UUF

On Nov17, CHANGE (Communities Helping All Neighbors Gain Empowerment) held an all-day public hearing at the Felowship on school discipline.  The primary issue was the disproportionate number of minority students, especially African-American males, assigned to the disciplinary school described as a pipeline to prison.  The CHANGE Education Team will draft suggested discipline changes based on the hearing, as well as consider providing advocates for students.

Roughly a hundred people attended, including UUs Charlie & Gail Davis, Carrie Galloway, Patti Hubbard, Janet Joyner, Donna & Ernie Schmid, Steve Scroggin, Nathan Spencer, Remi Wingo, & Ann Zimmerman.

Special thanks to Steve Scroggin, our CHANGE Core Team leader, for bringing a CHANGE meeting to the Fellowship for the first time.

Social Action Grant Applications Being Accepted

Have an idea for a social action project that needs funding? The next grant deadline is December 12, & applications/information are available at the social action table in the lobby.

Openings on Social Action Council

The Social Action Council (SAC) meets at noon on the second Sunday of the month. We provide coordination and communication for the congregation's social justice work, & we have room for more members. If interested, please contact any SAC person: Ann Zimmerman (chair), Carrie Galloway, Ruth Helein, Janet Owen, Steve Scroggin, Nathan Spencer.
